Living History

At Black Creek, we pull history out of the books, out of the classroom, and bring it to life.

We research the finest details about 19th century life in Ontario. Then we interpret and create programs to help visitors understand the past and appreciate the links between history and modern life. A visit to Black Creek Pioneer Village, where you can ask questions of the blacksmith, or learn about medical implements in the doctor’s house, or watch the gardeners tend to vegetables – puts the past into focus like no other experience.

Violin PlayersHere are some of the ways Black Creek brings history to life:

Historical interpreters: Not only do they add a human touch, they can also explain and demonstrate the details of village life.

Traditional trades people: You can watch a blacksmith, miller or tinsmith at work, and they'll take the time to explain how they do things, and why.

Period Costumes: Interpreters and trades people are dressed to represent rural Ontario in the mid-1800s. You can expect to see costumes ranging from shabbily dressed farmhands to more fashionable ladies and professional men all dressed up.

Hands on History Centre for the Kids: Kids can try traditional trades and pioneer survival skills like building a log cabin, fashioning a bucket, and weaving cloth.

Authentic restoration and re-creation: From costumes, furniture and paint colours, to the way fences are built - it's all presented faithfully so you can experience it the way it really was.

Special demonstrations: Everyday offers a schedule of demonstrations presented by historical interpreters and trades people.
