Black Creek Historic Brewery Introduces Black Creek Porter at the LCBO
Black Creek Porter, the first commercially available beer from the Black Creek Historic Brewery, launched this month in select LCBO stores where it is already enjoying strong sales and generating interest among beer experts. Sold in distinctive 500 mL pint bottles, the porter is based on traditional Ontario recipes of the late 1800s. Black Creek Porter can be enjoyed on its own, or paired with red meats or desserts, and is arriving right in time for the holiday entertaining season.
Characteristic of traditional turn-of-the-century porters, Black Creek Porter offers a smooth roasted flavour with notes of coffee and chocolate and a pleasing bitterness in the finish. "It's a very enjoyable and accessible beer for people who want to explore the world of beer a bit further, and I love that it is brewed right here in Toronto," said Roger Mittag, "professor of beer," who teaches about beer through his organization Thirst for Knowledge. "People who are not familiar with porters often imagine that the beer will be heavy. But it's really not. It's is an excellent beer for the winter months and perfect for the holidays."
The recipe for Black Creek Porter was derived from the traditional brewing techniques which are faithfully reproduced today at Black Creek Historic Brewery. Brewmaster Ed Koren perfected the recipe brewing small batches fermented in oak barrels. "We use brown malt from England, just like they did. Brown malt is roasted over hardwood fires which gives the beer a nice smoky flavour," said Ed Koren, brewmaster at Black Creek Historic Brewery. "It tastes great. There's no other porter on the market quite like it."
Due to the limited production capacity at the Black Creek Historic Brewery, Black Creek Porter is brewed at a modern facility under Koren's supervision. "It's the same recipe, just on a larger scale and on modern equipment, whereas everything at the Historic Brewery is done by hand without electricity," explained Koren.
Black Creek Porter is currently available in 60 LCBO stores from Ottawa to Hamilton and as far north as Huntsville, and new stores are being added weekly.
The Black Creek Historic Brewery is located in Black Creek Pioneer Village. Visitors can tour the brewery seven days a week. Black Creek Porter (product # 188862) retails for $3.55 per 500 mL bottle. LCBO customers can search the LCBO website, www.lcbo.com to locate stores offering the product, or simply ask for it at their local outlet.

About Black Creek Historic Brewery
Located in Black Creek Pioneer Village, the Black Creek Historic Brewery is a working recreation of a 19th century brewery, an era when beer was both a popular beverage and a staple food. Using only period equipment and no electricity, the Brewery handcrafts the same ale and porter varieties enjoyed in Ontario before Confederation. Open daily to the public, visitors can chat with Brewmaster in costume or join guided tours and taste samples drawn from oak barrels. The beer can be enjoyed on the premises at the Black Creek Historic Brewery Restaurant and Pub, or brought home in returnable "growlers." Public events are held throughout the year at the Brewery; the facility is also available for corporate and private functions. Black Creek ales and porters sold off-site are brewed at a commercial facility under the supervision of the Brewmaster. The Black Creek Historic Brewery is operated by Black Creek Pioneer Village in partnership with Pioneer Breweries Limited. For more information, visit http://www.blackcreekbrewery.ca.
