APPRENTICE FOR A DAY

Spend the day working one-on-one with our Blacksmith, Baker, Printer, Tinsmith, Spinner or Weaver. Experience the work of a 19th century crafts-person and learn all about the tools of the trade. Take home your finished product to show off to your friends and family!

  • $75/members, $80/non-member, one person per day (taxes not included)
  • Apprenticeships must be booked 2 weeks in advance
  • All Apprentices must be 15 years or older.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS

Apprentice for a Day: Baking
Spend the day learning how to bake using a historic bake oven in the Half Way House Inn. You will learn how to make a variety of baked goods by hand –- just the way they were in the 19th century! During the day, you will work one-on-one with the baker and she will be sure to answer any questions about the trade, the skills, or the history of the craft. Black Creek visitors will be wandering through the shop all day admiring the progress you are making on your historical project! At the end of the day you will take home your creation to show off to friends and family.

Apprentice for a Day: Blacksmithing
Spend the day learning the basics of blacksmithing in Black Creek’s historic Blacksmith Shop. You will learn the skills needed to create your very own reproduction item – made just the way they were created in the 19th century! During the day, you will work one-on-one with a tradesperson and s/he will be sure to answer any questions about the trade, the skills, or the history of the craft as the day goes along. At the end of the day you will take home your creation to show off to friends and family.

Blacksmithing Apprenticeships are only available May 11 – September 1 due to restoration of the Blacksmith Shop in Fall 2019.

Please note: Apprentices in the Blacksmith Shop MUST provide their own government approved steel-toed safety boots or shoes. No one is permitted in the Blacksmith Shop without safety boots. Individuals without appropriate footwear will not be allowed to apprentice on that day.

Apprentice for a Day: Printing
Spend the day learning the basics of historic printing in the Black Creek Printing Office. You will learn the skills needed to design and create your own poster on our 160-plus year old printing press. During the day, you will work one-on-one with a printer and s/he will be sure to answer any questions about the trade, the skills, or the history of the craft as the day goes along. Black Creek visitors will be wandering through the shop all day admiring the progress you are making on your historical project! At the end of the day you will take home your creation to show off to friends and family.

Apprentice for a Day: Spinning
Spend the day learning how to spin wool from our sheep into yarn in the Stong Family’s First House. You will learn how to prepare, card and spin and ply yarn using a treadle spinning wheel! During the day, you will work one-on-one with a spinner and s/he will be sure to answer any questions about the craft, the skills, or the history of spinning as the day goes along. Black Creek visitors will be wandering through the house all day admiring the progress you are making on your historical project! At the end of the day you will take home your spun skein of wool to show off to friends and family.

Spend the day learning the basics of tinsmithing in Black Creek’s historic Tinsmith Shop. You will learn the skills needed to create your very own reproduction item – made just the way they were created in the 19th century! During the day, you will work one-on-one with a tradesperson and s/he will be sure to answer any questions about the trade, the skills, or the history of the craft as the day goes along. Spend the day learning the basics of weaving in Black Creek’s historic Weaver’s Shop. You will learn the skills needed to create your very own reproduction rag runner – made just the way they were created in the 19th century! During the day, you will work one-on-one with the weaver and she will be sure to answer any questions about the trade, the skills, or the history of the craft as the day goes along. Black Creek visitors will be wandering through the shop all day admiring the progress you are making on your historical project! At the end of the day you will take home your creation to show off to friends and family.
