Ruth’s Story

CHAPTER FIVE

Ever since you came to Canada, you’ve wanted to run a newspaper, just like Mary Ann Shadd. Maybe the time isn’t quite right for that — not yet — but you join one that’s already established.

Your articles covering African-Canadian issues are renowned for their eloquence, intelligence, and passion. At last, you are letting your voice ring out, doing all you can to help those formerly enslaved.

You celebrate the news of Confederation, covering it thoroughly in your newspaper. For you, it’s another step closer to the country you imagine.

Though a celebratory party is held at Black Creek, you find yourself too busy to attend. There’s an article you need to finish, and three more to edit. You lean over your work with a smile.

At last, you’re home.

THE END

What’s next? Find out what happened to Ruth after Confederation.
