First Saturday: Wood Carving by Inuk artist, Barry Best
First Saturdays: Celebrating Local Artists
Inuk artist, Barry Best, carves wood from The Village’s fallen trees into beautiful spoons and talks about his art installation at The Village, Spirit Wind, which depicts the transformations between humans and animals, reflecting on the shared similarities among all living things.
Barry Best is a Toronto based Indigenous artist who has crafted elegant and engaging pieces for over a decade. Between his carvings, photography and videography, Barry has tied his relationship as an Indigenous artist and forester together through eco based projects to help shed light on the importance of sustainability in our environment. His battle with mental health is deep within his art and manifests itself in bright beautiful colours and engaging structures, inviting the public to be a part of his journey of healing.
See the past through their eyes.
Visit with Indigenous and other equity-deserving artista at The Village on the first Saturday of the month. Art connects us to other people. It opens our eyes to different ways of looking at the world around us and the history of the land we call home.
First Saturdays are included with admission to The Village.
