CHAPTER TWO

Well! Your brothers owe you an apology. As it happens, you are quite skilled at baseball.

You feel guilty as Mother gasps at your dirty elbows and torn stockings — but it’s so much fun!

Over the next year, your brothers let you play more and more. But one day, Mother pulls you aside.

“Edith, this baseball nonsense must stop. You’re 13: this isn’t ladylike.”

You can tell she’s disappointed. Maybe you can help with extra chores? Another pair of hands would ease Mother’s strain.

On the other hand, you’ve loved getting out of the house and proving yourself. Maybe you need to explore the world a bit more.
