CHAPTER FIVE
You’ve been hanging onto Ireland so tightly, and for so long, that it’s almost a relief to let go.
As time passes, you drift away from your childhood friends. Returning to Ireland seems like a distant dream: when you read about the fight for Irish independence in the newspaper, it feels harder to connect it to yourself.
You even start attending a Presbyterian church; it’s closer to your home, and a lot of your neighbours go.
When Confederation is announced, you’re happy, but tired. Over the last few years. you’ve thought a lot about who you are. At the celebration party, you realize: you’re Irish and Canadian.
In the end, you’ve got what you’ve always wanted: you’ve come home.
THE END
