Material: Blue glass
Description
Epergnes were large, extravagant, tiered metal centerpieces designed to display side dishes, fruit, sweetmeats, and even holiday ornaments on the dining table.
These eye-catching pieces were the dramatic focal point of a perfectly set table, used from the 18th through the 20th centuries.
By the end of the Victorian era, epergnes became smaller and were predominantly made of porcelain and colored glass, often serving as elegant holders for flowers and candles.
Fun Fact!
The word “epergne” is likely derived from the French term épargne, meaning “saving”, reflecting the idea that dinner guests were spared the task of passing dishes around the table.
